geotechnical soil construction

We have developed a niche when dealing with transportation, transit and rail projects. Our strength lies mostly in our ability to adapt and attack these projects that always seem to come with their own set of challenges. Rail often runs through tough terrain and unique obstacles. Transportation hubs and stations are often in busy and congested areas and commuter rail has overhead obstructions such as catenary lines..

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 allowed for railroads to invest in much needed capital improvements. CSX in particular invested in lowering track elevations to accommodate double stack containers under existing overhead bridges. Fidelis Engineering, Inc. conducted geotechnical investigations on hundreds of miles of track nationwide to determine if rock excavation was necessary. This helped our clients estimate not only how much rock excavation was necessary, but also if track outages were needed. Track outages equal loss of revenue.

Fidelis Engineering, Inc. performed many geotechnical investigations for SEPTA in and around the Philadelphia area. The projects included transit and bus loop station improvements and also electrification substation improvements. For example, Fidelis Engineering conducted a geotechnical investigation at the busy intersection of 5th and Market Streets in Philadelphia requiring flexibility with lane closures and limited work windows. These projects often have the additional dilemma of remediating the site from urban fill.

Amtrak also took the opportunity to invest in needed improvements. Fidelis Engineering, Inc. performed a geotechnical investigation for Amtrak in 2014. Amtrak was planning to replace all of the catenary structures on an 18-mile stretch of commuter rail line from Philadelphia to Paoil, PA. This portion of the Harrisburg Line traverses difficult to access track, rock outcrops and varying soil and rock strata. We were able to employ various drill rigs and adapt to changing conditions in order to access the boring locations and stay safe of dangerous overhead catenary lines.
